Flora of Ethiopia

Ethiopia's close proximity to the equator and its high elevations make it home to a diverse array of ecosystems: Afro-alpine tundra, steep mountains covered by tropical montane forests, expansive savannah grasslands, and semi-desert plains. The highlands can be likened to an oceanic island, cut off from contact with neighboring countries and their plants and animals. As a result, at least 1,000 of its 7,000 plant species are endemic to Ethiopia (only found in Ethiopia).
