Supplies
donated to Buko school
(February 2002)
In February 2002, the primary school in the village of Buko received needed
school supplies delivered by TMF personnel and purchased with donations from
TMF members. The effort was part of a community development plan implemented
last year by TMF. The school, comprised of two mud and bamboo buildings, lacked
essential equipment and resources for its 250 students and 5 teachers. Among
the delivered supplies were 260 exercise books, 500 pencils, 100 pens, 5 English/Ahmaric/Oromo
dictionaries, 4 world maps, a teacher's resource manual and a variety of educational
maps, charts and posters. The school, which offers grades 1 through 4, teaches
the basics of reading, writing and mathematics. Students who wish to continue
their education must travel to larger towns with more advanced educational
opportunities. TMF is already planning a second shipment of supplies to the
school later this year. It will include new chalk boards for the classrooms
and text books that students will be allowed to check out and use for reference.
The chief of the village has pledged to pull together community resources
to improve the structure of the crumbling buildings and to construct new desks
and chairs for the classrooms.
