Equipment fund supplies gear to national park
(December 2005)
One of TMF's goals has been to provide much needed equipment for the staff of Bale Mountains National Park (BMNP) to enable them to patrol for domestic animals illegally in the park, assist researchers with fieldwork, and provide guidance to park visitors.
During the last two years, TMF raised enough money through donations, the sald of photographs, and picture presentations in Colorado to purchase 40 pairs of Ethiopian military boots and 80 pairs of sock. On December 22 Bob and Karel Waltermire sponsored a banquet at the park headquarters for all of the park staff, park guides, and officals from the village and woreda of Dinsho (equivalent to a county in the U.S.). At the banquet the boots and socks were distributed to the BMNP staff and guides. We hope this is the first of many occasions when TMF can provide quality equipment for BMNP.
TMF would like to thank everyone who made a donation or purchased photographs in support of the equipment fund. TMF will continue to provide equipment to park staff and guides, bring people together at events such as the banquet, and work to encourage cooperation between park staff and local political leaders. This is all a part of conserving the balance between cultural and natural resources in Ethiopia.
