Scientists and students donate school supplies
(December 2004)
Research scientists and graduate students at the Natural Resource Ecology
Laboratory (NREL) at Colorado State University donated $700 to purchase school
supplies for primary schools near Bale Mountains National Park. The majority
of funds were used to purchase textbooks and materials for the teachers, while
the rest was used for student supplies and learning games. Materials included
textbooks on georaphy, botany, physics, zoology, geology, and math, and dictionaries
in English, Amharic, and Oromian. Posters of the world, endemic animals, and
the alphabet were also delivered to schools, along with 300 pocket dictionaries
and over 1,700 pencils for students.
The materials, distributed among ten schools, were officially presented at
the school in Dinsho by TMF staff and BMNP officials. They were honored by
a brief ceremony with teachers, regional educators, and students then touredthe
classrooms, school grounds, and a community forestry project started by the
school's nature club.
