Research and Conservation of the Mountain Nyala

First and foremost, we would like to thank all of our funders, members, partners, staff and volunteers for the success of The Murulle Foundation's Mountain Nyala Research and Conservation Project. We initiated this project three years ago because of the minimal amount of research previously done on the mountain nyala. A fundamental understanding of the biological and behavioral characteristics of the mountain nyala was lacking.

The first few years of the project were spent compiling historic accounts from early explorers and hunters, investigating reports of remote populations, surveying different habitat types and assessing the threats to the species, which are largely associated with land-use activities. Despite public perceptions that the extinction of the mountain nyala was imminent, our preliminary conclusions were to the contrary. We found that most local mountain nyala populations were stable or increasing and that management and conservation efforts were quite effective.

The goals of the project are simple: 1) use scientific methodology to produce sound and accurate results, 2) make these results available to scientists, conservationists, resource managers, and policy-makers, and 3) use our strength as a grassroots organization to develop and implement sustainable conservation strategies at local and regional levels.
